What Should Couples Look for in a Shared Mattress?

Rick Simpson, owner of Route 66 Sleep & Home Center

The Short Answer

The four things that matter for couples: motion isolation (their tossing doesn’t wake you), edge support (you can sit on the edge without rolling in), a firmness both of you can tolerate, and if you sleep very differently — a split-king adjustable base so each side moves independently.

The Deeper Answer

  • Motion isolation. Memory foam beds (WellFlex) isolate motion best. Hybrid beds isolate less because the coils transmit some movement; well-designed hybrids like the Midnight ICE still isolate well thanks to the plush top layer.
  • Edge support. Zoned coil hybrids (ChiroPro Hybrid) hold the edge best. Pure foam beds tend to sag at the edge over time.
  • Firmness compromise. A medium-firm feel usually satisfies more mixed couples than either extreme. Come try together — Rick will let you both lie on each option for as long as it takes.
  • Split-king adjustable base. Two Twin XL bases side-by-side under a King mattress (or under two separate Twin XL mattresses). Each side adjusts independently — one partner flat, the other in zero-gravity. Common answer when compromise on the mattress itself isn’t working.

See Adjustable Bases for the split-king detail.
