Does Medicare or Insurance Cover an Adjustable Bed or Lift Bed?
The Short Answer
The straight answer: Medicare may cover certain hospital beds when a doctor documents medical necessity and requirements are met. Retail adjustable bases and consumer lift beds like the ones we sell are generally NOT covered — and we’ll never tell you otherwise. What makes them affordable at Route 66 instead: lease-to-own approval in minutes up to $5,000, plus layaway.
The Deeper Answer
The distinction Medicare makes:
- Hospital beds (Durable Medical Equipment). May be covered when a doctor documents medical necessity, the supplier is Medicare-enrolled, and other requirements are met. These are the clinical beds you’d see in a hospital — different from a retail adjustable or lift bed.
- Retail adjustable bases and consumer lift beds. Sold as consumer goods, not medical devices. Generally not covered by Medicare or private health insurance.
What this means in practice: if a doctor prescribes a hospital bed and you go through a Medicare-enrolled DME supplier, you may have coverage for that specific product. If you’re shopping for a retail adjustable base or a sleep-to-stand bed from Route 66 or any similar retailer, plan to pay for it directly or finance it.
Route 66’s answer to affordability: Acima lease-to-own up to $5,000 (no established credit history required, approval in minutes), Snap pay-over-time options for qualified buyers (products vary), and layaway if you prefer to pay it down at your own pace. See Financing.
